Our story

How a list of complaints about buying clothes online turned into a store.

Camila Chic · Fashion and accessories

It started with a list

It wasn't a business plan. It was a list of complaints.

Things that happened every time we tried to buy clothes online: photos that didn't match the product, sizes that varied between two garments from the same store, shipping costs that appeared at checkout and doubled the price, return policies written to discourage anyone from using them.

That list grew for months. At some point it stopped being a complaint and became a plan.

The question that changed everything

What if, instead of selling a thousand things, we sold a few things chosen really well?

It sounds obvious now. At the time it felt backwards: everyone told us that in e-commerce the winner is whoever has the biggest catalog, the most filters, the most options. But when we talked to actual women about how they shop, we heard the same thing every time: I don't want more options, I want better ones.

So we built the store the other way around. Start with few pieces, each one justified, and grow only when we find something genuinely worth adding.

Where the name comes from

Camila is a name that travels. It's warm without being precious, familiar without being plain, and it sounds the same in every language we'd ever want to sell in.

Chic is the other half. A short word that describes exactly what we were after: elegance without effort, without pretension, and without needing to shout.

Camila Chic is both things at once. Approachable and elevated. We didn't want a name that pretended to be something it isn't in order to seem more expensive.

The first months

We started by reviewing dozens of suppliers. We ordered samples, washed them, stretched them, wore them for weeks. We rejected the vast majority.

The pieces that survived that process are the ones in the store today. There aren't many, and that's intentional. We'd rather launch with three things we'd defend with our eyes closed than thirty we couldn't explain one by one.

Our rule for what gets in

A piece only enters the catalog if someone on the team would buy it themselves, at full price, by choice. If the answer isn't a clear yes, it doesn't go in.

What we learned along the way

Sizing is problem number one

It's the most common reason an online purchase goes wrong. So we publish real measurements for every garment — not just S, M and L labels — and we say how the fit runs on different bodies.

Trust is built before the sale

Nobody hands over their card details to a brand they just met without a reason to. So we publish our policies in full, answer quickly, and don't hide conditions in fine print.

Free shipping isn't a marketing trick

It's how we make sure the price you see is the real price. We'd rather build it into the product than surprise you at checkout.

Where we're going

We want to stay small in catalog and large in judgment. Add pieces slowly. Listen to what our customers ask for and actually respond.

If you're reading this in our first months, you got here early. Thank you for that.
